PLAYLIST SERIES

is an eclectic mix of hit songs from the latest records of the least labels.

Please open your mind and push that start button now!

The making of the album VOUS ET NOUS was also full of twists and turns. It started out as a solo effort by Kabyle musician ARESKI. But little by little, as Areski was filling tapes with poems, improvised skits, electronic experiments, North African trance, refined acoustics and medieval drones BRIGITTE FONATAINE would sneak into the studio at nightfall, adding her voice here and there, her whispers and screams, giving fuel to the fire in a total surreal blaze. The album was originally released in 1977. Now you can get it from KYTHIBONG RECORDS. Anyway Fontaine also collaborated such acts as Stereolab, Jean-Claude Vannier, Gotan Project, Grace Jones or Sonic Youth of course.

On their blistering 7″ debut on 12XU RECORDS, Texan band MISSING PAGES channel the anxiety, exasperation, and jubilation born of those delicate moments in life when the casual comforts and routine are stripped away, forcing us to confront the ugly truth of who we really are.

3 —–

John Schooley‘s project ROCKET 808 is like Suicide adding Link Wray as a third band member. Debut single out now on 12XU RECORDS. Full-length album in early 2019. Anyway his moment in time, Schooley is the only person who can claim to have been a member of the Crypt, Goner, Sympathy For The Record Industry and 12XU rosters.

4 —-

Ground-zero Louisiana-born rocker LINDA GAIL LEWIS is the younger sister and frequent performing partner of Jerry Lee Lewis, whose piano innovations she carries forward. Her present-at-the-creation cred buoys the record while country musicians ROBBIE FULKS – who sings, plays, leads the band, writes most of the songs, and arranges the others – provides an anchoring sensibility, one that savors old sounds but sidesteps nostalgia on the album WILD! WILD! WILD! on BLOOODSHOT RECORDS (US)

5 —–

„TERRY is domesticity. TERRY romances the mundane. This is how romance ekes out a triumph amidst mundanity. That’s what Billy Bragg’s New England and Squeeze’s Up The Junction do. TERRY’s suburban escapism moment is Ciao Goodbye.” You can find it on TERRY’s third album I’M TERRY on UPSET THE RHYTHM RECORDS (UK)

6 —–

Cleveland based gutter pop band FASCINATING perfectly melds its sharp, no-bullshit pop sensibilities with the raw, in-the-red sound indelibly connected to the midwestern underground. Debut album COMMUNIST POWER on DIRTY WATER RECORDS (UK)

7 —–

PINK AIR is the new album from the distinctive and idiosyncratic New York cult band ELYSIAN FIELDS. Their 11th record is a post-apocalyptic rock & roll joyride will be released by OJET in the States and by MICROCULTURES RECORDS in France.

8 —–

Swedish band HATER‘s new album SIESTA is the perfect soundtrack for that summer romance and the inevitable break up.

9 —–

In some respects New Yorker ANAMON‘s self released debut album PURPLE, GREEN & YELLOW is the fruit of what the hardcore underground once promised to deliver us: the self-reliance, moxie, and quick/dirty recording ethic of the Minutemen and the Meat Puppets, coupled with Fleetwood Mac and Blue Oyster Cult’s flair for drama and sprinkled with the goosebumpy starlit twang old Crystal Gayle and Gram Parsons records give us.

10 —–

and that record is insane, Ivy Claudy the Female Singer is just a total wild woman! super crazy live show and she give you everything! and Buddy Fuzz the guitar player plays like a caveman… this is raw end of time punk no wave at its best!!! The SLOKS are a Super Raw Power Ultra Primitive Dirty Suicide Destructive Garage Punk No-Wave Trashed out Rock’n’Roll combo from Turin, Italy and their debut album out now on VOODOO RHYTHM RECORDS (CH)

11 —–

JOSEPHINE FOSTER‘s new album FAITHFUL FAIRY HARMONY is a maze of spirituals, ritual prayers, blues laments, vestal hymns and jubilant benedictions.

12 —–

The 3 entreprenors of French trio THE WORLD stay on their ultra-liberal path with NIGHTS, their second album. Transhumanist synths, lyrics of winners, rhythms tuned to convince investors. Turn any car into an SUV. An ideal album to go with team building weekends, administration boards meetings and redundancy plans. it will release soon on KYTHIBONG RECORDS (F)

13 —–

SUPERHUMAN HAPPINESS is a musical collective led by Brooklyn multi-instrumentalist Stuart Bogie (Arcade Fire, Iron and Wine, Antibalas). While the first album „Hands” has earned a reputation for ass-shaking, euphoric dance music, the new album BEACON takes a darker and more emotional turn. It is performed by musicians from Antibalas, Rubblebucket, Metropolitan Opera, Angelique Kidjo, Elysian Fields, War on Drugs, Darkside and more.

14 —–

Refined R&B grooves and defined jazz harmonies on New Yorker GADADU‘s second album OUTER SONG.

15 —–

If you claim MARIJUANA DEATHSQUADS to be the Midwest’s answer to Boredoms (or at least F*ck B*tt*ns), they probably wouldn’t mind the compliment. Debut album TUFF GUY ELECTRONICS on PIONEER WORKS (US)

16 —–

BOGIE KAUFMAN MANN’s album VOLUME 1 is a record of improvisations that don’t sound like improvisations because “we wanted to feel like it was a group improvisation all the time, so there was never really a lot of soloing going on – there was a lot of trioing going on.” Playing at low volume on guitar, woodwinds, and percussion, set up close to one another in the same room, headphone-free.

17 —–

END OF THE GAME is the anticipated debut full length by EYES OF LOVE, a band helmed by Brooklyn songwriter Andrea Schiavelli. Assembling a crew of some of the most skilled musicians in New York’s underground; Lily Konigsberg (Palberta, Lily and Horn Horse), Sammy Weissberg (The Cradle, Sweet Baby Jesus), Paco Cathcart (The Cradle, Shimmer). These 14 tracks harness the chaos of reckless abandon amid classic structures.

18 —–

New Zealand band ORCHESTRA OF SPHERES‘ double LP MIRROR is an exploration of energies and atmospheres, from intense futuristic funk and sonic tape assemblages to windswept reflections from a far flung corner of the world. It combines the band’s ecstatic rhythmic power and ritualistic vocals with an expanded orchestral palette.

19 —–

The band JOBS is fueled by truly ambitious compositions that seem to defy all logic in the most profound of ways. They’ve always had a knack for producing melodic head-boppers within bouts of joyous experimentation. You can feel this on their new cassette LOG ON FOR THE FREE CHANCE TO LOG ON FOR FREE on RAMP LOCAL RECORDS (US)

20 —–

Globetrotting Swiss-American blues trash duo REVEREND BEAT-MAN & NICOLE IZOBEL GARCIA’s collaborative album BAILE BRUJA MUERTO of course on VOODOO RHYTHM RECORDS (CH)

21 —–

WILLIMAM ELLIOTT WHITMORE is a singer-songwriter/banjoist/guitarist/drum-stompin’ solo act from Lee County, Iowa. He meld country, blues, folk, and punk styles. His songs are haunting, rustic, powerful, and byproducts of living his entire life on the family farm and being involved in the hardcore-punk scene in the local community. His brand new album KILONOVA is a collection of 10 cover songs from artists who have influenced him: Dock Boggs, Harlan Howard, Magnetic Fields, Bad Religion, Bill Withers, ZZ Top, Johnny Cash, Red Meat, Jimmy Driftwood and Captain Beefheart.

22 —–

„The foundation for what is on the record comes from long before I had any interest in playing jazz. It is heavily rooted in the grunge, indie, and punk rock that I was listening to in high school. We’d write music, rehearse bands, and play shows all summer long in Baltimore clubs like the Small Intestine, Talking Head, and the old Ottobar. The album CRICKETS is just the sound of those summers as a teenager, but with a decade or two of musical development mixed in” – said composer and bassist ADAM HOPKINS about his album. It is the first release of his label OUT OF YOUR HEAD RECORDS (US)

23 —–

THE CALLAS is the tip of a Greek artistic squad producing music, artworks, films, magazines, events, art shows, initiated by the brothers Lakis & Aris Ionas. They worked with Sonic Youth drummer LEE RANALDO on the soundtrack of their new feature film “The Great Eastern” and on their new full-length album TROUBLE AND DESIRE which is released now on INNER EAR (GR) and DIRTY WATER RECORDS (UK)

24 —–

Throwing Muses’ KRISTIN HERSH has recently released her new album POSSIBLE DUST CLOUDS on FIRE RECORDS (UK)

25 —–

TEKSTI-TV 666 is a six-headed shoegazing kraut-punk monster. Armed with no less than four (and sometimes, just sometimes, five) electric guitars. Nowadays they are one of the most in-demand live acts in their native Finland, and select performances abroad have caused a bit of a storm as well. Second album Aidattu tulevaisuus on SVART RECORDS.

26 —–

JOHNNY MAFIA. French reverb-soaked slap-backed fuzzed out sonic attack. Inspired by classics like The Ramones, T-Rex, and The Clash, they also draw heavily on contemporary acts like Ty Segall, Jay Reatard, and the Wavves. Their debut album PRINCES DE L’AMOUR is produced by Jim Diamond (The Dirtbombs) and will release on November 9 on DIRTY WATER RECORDS (UK)

27 —–

IGUANA DEATH CULT is just a fine Dutch garage rock band who has a new single. Buy the vinyl here.

1. Experimental, kitchen-produced hybrid of folk, musique concrète and psychedelia by ODETTA HARTMAN.

She raised by pioneering parents on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, NYC, Odetta’s milieu was a “colorful culture of artistry,” that included early exposure to community activism, renegade film screenings, poetry readings and trips to CBGB’s. Inchoate punk and hip hop were aural wallpaper, as were the 45s spinning in the household jukebox featuring her dad’s extensive collection of soul and afrobeat records, as well as her Appalachian mother’s classic country selections. A classically trained violinist with a penchant for back-porch banjo, Odetta combines these variegated sounds of her childhood with her personal passion for folk music and the musicological legacy of Alan Lomax. But she never takes herself too seriously and always tries to have fun, so she went to the kitchen.

“Many of the beats on the album were recorded in the kitchen: the snare sound is actually a running faucet, or if you hear these glockenspiel bells that’s actually a set of kitchen bowls. Other percussive elements include scissors, a pepper grinder and keys on the radiator.” Anyway she loves mistakes in songwriting or recording, because they so often lead to something greater. I do not know how many songs got its final form by mistakes on this album, just know that is weird and wonderful. Her second album OLD ROCKHOUNDS NEVER DIE is slated for release on NORTHERN SPY RECORDS and MEMPHIS INDUSTRIES on August 10, 2018.

2. THE DUE DILIGENCE is a free form band of songwriter Isaac Gillespie and his friends. The new alum LIFE IS HARD is the final piece of a trilogy. It was started with the country-soul album „I Will Wreck Your Life” in 2011. It was the encapsulation of the years Gillespie spent in the antifolk scene. The second part was the frenetic Velvet Underground-infused sarcasm of 2014’s Are You Down. It’s the wild night on the town, but it’s also the morning after. A recognition of the difficulty of life.

LIFE IS HARD is largely inspired by songwriter Gillespie’s grandmother’s passing, and her perseverance through the many challenges of being a single mother and a child of immigrants in the 1950s. LIFE IS HARD is both the death album and the pop album. It provides a trash-gospel meditation on the tug of war between the lusts that drive us and the deaths to which we’re driven. It was inspired by the psychedelic soul of Sly & the Family Stone and the „plaintive mythologizing” of Grateful Dead. It will be released in June on PAPER GARDEN RECORDS (US).

——–

3. Atlanta’s SUBSONICS are a gutter-glam, minimal rock’n’roll trio. FLESH COLORED PAINT is their 8th album. Like all their previous works, this is a distilled hodgepodge of decades of popular culture and classic literature culminating in a collection of short and groovy shambolar: Chuck Berry, Albert Camus, AM radio rock jocks, Bo Diddley, Golden Age TV, surrealism, Mad Magazine, kung-fu flicks, Herman Melville, Little Richard, self-negating philosophy, David Johansen, The Bible, Dee Dee Ramone, Lee Van Cleef, Cornell Woolrich, advertising jingles, Dada, Carole King, Bugs Bunny, and Casablanca; the poem, not the film. The album was released by SLOVENLY RECORDS.

——–

4. New Yorker PARQUET COURTS is a punk band. Hard to say anything else. OK, compared to Total Punk Records style punk bands they rather play pop music. Their influences come from Velvet Underground, Ramones and Talking Heads, but I also hear The Fall and even Country Teasers in their music. I remember their first album was a big revelation for me. There the sound was more punk than on the next ones. Fortunately unlike many others they don’t write the same record year by year. And now with the new album WIDE AWAKE we arrived to New Orelans.

——–

5. Howe Gelb refused to cancel their first Los Angeles live gig when his band Giant Sandworms had broken up days before in Tucson, Arizona. Instead, he headed out anyway with Scott Garber, the newest member who’d only been in the band for about a year. Gelb asked fellow Tucsonan Winston Watson who lived in Los Angeles to jump in as drummer for the live date. And he did it with no rehearsal. The result was so sparked with adrenalin, that the trio set up an impromptu studio session the next day to attempt to capture the sonic thrust on tape. Later they recorded some songs to make it to a full LP with a different drummer in Tucson. The album Valley Of Rain was released in 1985 under the name of GIANT SAND.

But at the time of the recording Gelb was unacquainted with the possibilities of tube amps. So 30 some years later, now that the band had been put to sleep indefinitely, those very first songs had begun creeping into the last Giant Sand tours. It somehow seemed appropriate to give them another shot with the proper amp just to see what they could’ve been. What made the idea more approachable was the availability of both original drummers living back in Tucson. And they recorded the songs again together with the two newest member. And the sound is insane.

The album RETURN TO VALLEY OF THE RAIN on FIRE RECORDS (UK)

6. After a few months spent abroad in Spain and her infatuation with Brazilian music, Chicago based Vivian McConnell was inspired to create a dreamy new genre she calls “nap-rock” and to assume the moniker of V.V. LIGHTBODY – the name of her piano-playing grandmother. The ocean-like tunes on the album BATHING PEACH combine the vivid lyricism of Joni Mitchell with the jazz-inflected chords of Sam Prekop’s early solo records. Unanchored in a sea of glitching mermaids, V.V. LIGHTBODY is a surreal reflection of McConnell’s experiences and influences that coalesce into an intimate narrative of self-discovery.

——–

7. After half year that her album with Kurt Vile was released Australian indie rock songstress COURTNEY BARNETT has released her new album TELL ME HOW YOU REALLY FEEL with contribution of Kim and Kelly Deal from Breeders on MILK RECORDS (AUS), MOM+POP MUSIC (US) and MARATHON ARTISTS (UK)

——–

8. So here is PALBERTA‘s new album ROACH GOIN’ DOWN on WHARF CAT RECORDS (US) soon. The best phrase which best describes the music of these girls is: wap wap wap dabbada ding ding dack dabbada.

——–

9. THE DREEBS have been making music in New York since 2009. Over the next couple years they would find a home in the Brooklyn noise rock community, while staying true to their specific sound palette. The best if their friend Andrew Savage (Parquet Quarts) tells you about the band and their new album FOREST OF A CREW on RAMP LOCAL RECORDS (US).

First a little catch up for the unacquainted: Every member of The Dreebs has, at some point, been a member of PC Worship (that is if the players in the notorious New York City collective could ever be called members). The Dreebs were first described to me years ago as PC Worship’s weirder side project, which immediately caught my attention because, how could a band be weirder than PC Worship. I’m not going to even attempt to quantify that because it’s utterly impossible. Though over the years, we’ve seen a sort of Dreebian declaration of independence by their increased presence in the New York City DIY and avant-garde scenes. That independence has been loudly articulated in the form of Forest Of A Crew. It’s the sum of eight songs and seven instrumentals. These pieces wash over the listener like vignettes of a fever dream, punctuated with moments of terror and beauty. It exists not in romanticized New York of old where artists could survive in squalor so long as they existed in inexpensive and undesirable locations where no squares fear to tread. Rather, the hellscape of The Dreebs is of a different variety, where even Bushwick is unaffordable and the decision to live as an artist in the city has become a perilous one.

——–

10. THE COMMON COLD is an English psychedelic rock band whose sound incorporates elements of Krautrock, post-punk, and northern soul. It has been formed by two friends Ajay Saggar and Mark Wareing, the duo had served time in legendary British punk band Dandelion Adventure many years before. Two years ago they took to the stage for the first time together nearly after 30 years to play a set of psych jams. Later they got three drummers, but one time just two play. They got the influence from Kaleidoscope, Neu!, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and The Fall. On their debut album SHUT UP! YO LIBERALS! on ACTION RECORDS features former drummers of Cornershop and The Fall.

——–

11. SECOND STILL is an LA based post-punk, cold wave wave band. Best describe them the names of the labels which release their music: Manic Depression, Weyrd Son and Sentimental Records. Their new EP EQUALS was released on WEYRD SON RECORDS (Belgium). I was so lucky that i saw them in Budapest not long before. It was a frantic night.

——–

12. APOSTILLE is the solo electronic project of Night-School Records‘ head Michael Kasparis. His second solo album CHOOSE LIFE will release on 8 June on UPSET THE RHYTHM RECORDS, and it’s the greatest new wave synth-pop music what I heard recently. Minimal and courageous. It’s not a simple thing. Through EBM and acid techno finally it reach to Prodigy.

——–

13. It’s time for mysterious cinematic pop melancholia with Scottish musician PICTISH TRAIL. He is a svelte, intelligent, adorable balladeer, trapped inside the body of an oversized, oft-bearded folk ogre. Runs Lost Map Records, up on the isle of Eig. It’s one of the Small Isles in the Inner Hebrides with a population around 100. His extraordinary vocals reveal hidden depths and have been accompanied by everything from acoustic guitar to a full-on four piece metal band to throbbing dance beats and samples, and often during the course of the same gig. The album FUTURE ECHOES originally released in 2016 on his label, but now it will be re-released with a bunch of unreleased remixes and live materials in July on FIRE RECORDS (UK)

——–

14. „Searching for the light in the pouring rain” is the motto of THE GOLDEN DREGS. It’s the project of Benjamin Woods with a musical approach inspired by 70’s Americana and jam bands, The Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan’s The Basement Tapes, and the documentary movie about the Mussel Shoals Studio.

The debut album LAFAYETTE is jangly summer-summoning pop for the hours when the sun is disappearing below the sea. What it plays out is a rich representation of small town living; from the churn of the rumour mill to the assortment of intriguing characters that only seem to exist far away from motorways, Itsu chains and the relative anonymity afforded by city living. It was recorded with contributions from some of the town Falmouth’s best musicians – the Cleave brothers (The Red Cords), Samuel Stacpoole (Holiday Ghosts), Jake Wilbourne (The Black Tambourines) and plenty more. And released on ART IS HARD RECORDS. And good to listen to it.

——–

15. ONYX was the avant-garde electronic duo of American songwriter and instrumentalist Judd Stone, and British vocalist and fashion model Beveur in the early 80s. The only instruments they used are drums /percussion and synthesizers – except for a primitive drum machine track that is used on “Planet X”. All of the instruments are played, and there is no syncing or sequencers used on any of the recordings. The bass tracks are keyboard bass. And what they recorded it is still fresh.

COMPLETE WORKS 1981-83 will release in June on Osaka based Franco-Japanese label MIND RECORDS.

1. James Joyce once said that if all of Dublin was destroyed, they ought to be able to rebuild it brick by brick just from reading his novels. WILDER MAKER’s ZION is the first chapter in a musical novel that makes the same claim for Brooklyn, NY.

ZION is a kaleidoscopic snapshot of years hustling for a break in New York City: waking up at 5 am to pour coffee for the brownstone-owning elite, waiting for a drug dealer on a city bench outside a blurry house party, moving catastrophically from apartment to apartment in the garbage scented heat, glimpsing euphoria through the ritual of taking your place among the anonymous crowd at a music festival, having your heart shattered in front of an audience at a bar, drunkenly contemplating bodega window displays, circling ever closer to something that could either be perfection or the drain, depending on the day.

Written by guitarist/saxophonist/singer Gabriel Birnbaum and brought to life with longtime collaborators Katie Von Schleicher, Nick Jost (Baroness), Adam Brisbin (Sam Evian, Jolie Holland) and Sean Mullins.

Its influences run from classic 70’s Dylan to blown out free jazz saxophone, from Dr. John’s swampy psychedelia to Ethiopian sounds picked up from Birnbaum’s many years as a member of Debo Band, with hints of Coltrane’s classic quartet and nods to The Velvet Underground. The album ZION will be released in July on NORTHERN SPY RECORDS (US)

2. Everything what you never wanted to know about retail:

ARNDALES is a sardonic post-punk quartet,
a hidden gem at an English countryside warehouse.
Their long-awaited debut album “SHOPS” recently released.

The album “SHOPS” is coming soon on IN THE RED RECORDINGS.
And there is nothing shiny. Just old fashioned music like the old Fall
with a Negativland song which is replaced to mid-Bedfordshire.

———-

3. „This record really began when I got my first analog synthesizer and started making wild and odd noises with it. I sat on the couch with it on my lap and headphones on for two weeks and never found the end to the sounds it could make, and I still haven’t, half a year later” – said Polish-American drummer Tym Wojcik about his new album JITTER VISIONS. He recorded it with his band called CUP. It is released now on AAGOO RECORDS (US). For fans of Slaughterhouse era Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees and the Beatles.

———-

4. „As the rainbow enters the sky and shines through the rain, all the birds lift their heads, singing. This album lures us into being blindly joyful, shying away from the terrible troubles of this world.”

French band CHOCOLAT BILLY is not a simple thing. For example, they played their first show opening for American avant-garde jazz guitarist Eugene Chadbourne in 2002. And the new album DELICATE DELI is – with a little overdrawn – as if it would be a common effort of Deerhoof and Chemical Brothers. It releases on KYTHIBONG and POTAGERS NATURES RECORDS (F).

———-

5. The female half of Moon Duo Sanae Yamada has written a solo album under the name of VIVE LA VOID during tours and recordings. Coming soon on SACRED BONES RECORDS (US).

———-

6. Chicago-born sometimes Brazil-resident avant-garde jazz musician BEN LAMAR GAY’s debut album DOWNTOWN CASTLES CAN NEVER BLOCK THE SUN a compilation album. Songs were taken from 7 albums he made over the last 7 years but never made the effort to actually release. It is coming in early May on INTERNATIONAL ANTHEM RECORDS (US). Anyway, he is one of the most prolific collaborators in Chicago’s creative music community. For example, he was a core component of Makaya McCraven’s last album Highly Rare, and we praise it.

———-

7. Cold wave disco, krautrock, post-punk, synth-pop. These are what I can say about the music of Canadian duo FREAK HEAT WAVES. And well, there is a strange thing. They named Texan hip-hop pioneer Dj Screw as their main influence. You can check these things if you listen to their new album BEYOND XXXL. It is released on TELEPHONE EXPLOSION RECORDS (CAN). Cassette on French label ATELIER CISEAUX.

———-

8. Cadillac born New Orleans based American traditionalist LUKE WINSLOW-KING plays a mix of old, but maybe eternal American tunes with his band: ragtime, country, blues, gospel, dixie, bluegrass, jazz, rock and roll with minimal and occasionally brass band orchestration. His new album BLUE MESA will be released on 11 May on BLOODSHOT RECORDS (US)

———-

9. The Jack Cades was born in late 2017 when Mike (Lead Guitar, Vocals) and Elsa (Rhythm Guitar, Vocals) decided to record some of their songs at Mole’s (Drums) notorious State Records Studios in Folkestone, Kent. They invited John Gibbs (The Masonics, The Wildebeests) to record bass on some of their songs at the time, which resulted in a mini debut LP „Music for Children”, which will be released on 18th May on DIRTY WATER RECORD (UK). It is a mix of a shared passion for inspirational sounds such as 1960s garage bands, snotty punk from the 1970s and sun-kissed sweaty rhythm n’ blues.

By the way, Jack Cade was the leader of a popular revolt in England in 1450. After the early success, he declared himself Lord Mayor of London. In this position, he initiated a series of tribunals dedicated to seeking out and convicting those accused of corruption. After such a sham trial the Lord High Treasurer and his son were beheaded. But many of the rebels, including Cade, began to engage in looting and drunken behavior. Gradually Cade’s inability to control his followers alienated the initially sympathetic citizens of London, who eventually turned against the rebels. He was murdered and his body underwent a mock trial and was ritually beheaded. Then his body was dragged through the streets of London before being quartered.

10. “Marvin would kick your ass for nothing. A true genius, Marvin was a pure original” said Iggy Pop about the extraordinary musician MARVIN PONTIAC. And if Iggy is so into him than I introduce that true genius to you. MARVIN PONTIAC was born in 1932, the son of an African father from Mali and a white Jewish mother from New Rochelle, New York. The father’s original last name was Toure but he changed it to Pontiac when the family moved to Detroit, believing it to be a conventional American name. (… ) Reportedly Marvin’s music was the only music that Jackson Pollack would ever listen to while he painted, this respect was not reciprocated. In 1970 Marvin believed that he was abducted by aliens. (…) When he was arrested for riding a bicycle naked down the side streets of Slidell, it provided a sad but clear view of Marvin’s coming years. In 1971 he moved back to Detroit where he drifted forever and permanently into insanity. He was killed by a bus accident in 1977.

His only album GREATEST HITS was released posthumously in 1999. And this unstable genius recorded his African rhythm and blues songs with such great musicians as Marc Ribot, John Medeski, Billy Martin, Eszter Bálint and many others. It is recently re-released on NORTHERN SPY RECORDS (US). If you want to know more about MARVIN PONTIAC you can read his strange story here.

11. GOSH! is a minimal psych-pop duo. When I got their new album ODYSSEY I wanted to show it to everybody. Hey, listen to this! So simple, bittersweet and beautiful.

The band has started when Padraig left his psychedelic post-americana band Nude Sunrise and started dating with Claire. One of the first moments they spent together there were guitars. Claire picked the bass and they learned “Badlands” from The Jesus and Mary Chain. Anyway, she never played any instruments before and GOSH! is her
first band. And it is among my brand new favourites. The new album ODYSSEY was written after they got back to Chicago from a chaotic tour. It remembers an underpaid journey as arduous as the real Ulysses’s, full of tragic twists and chemical quicksands. “All while watching the new season of Twin Peaks. It was a dark time, but we channeled that darkness and complete sense of defeat into creativity and in turn have produced something incredibly positive” – said Claire.

The album ODYSSEY will be released in mid-May on NICEY MUSIC (US).

12. “Shit needs to be shaken up. I’m always moved by unrest or agitation. That’s what moves me. We need to shake things up. We like to be shaken up.” It’s the ars poetica of PARLOR WALLS guitarist/frontwoman Alyse Lamb who founded the band with the drummer and simultaneously keyboards player Chris Mulligan.

Their debut album decades after the wall between rock and jazz began to fall took us further down the road towards. Now on the EP EXO – which introduces clarinetist/programmer/multi-instrumentalist Jason Shelton to the band’s lineup -, PARLOR WALLS erode at the divisions between no wave and new wave by balancing melody and what Lamb and Mulligan refer to as “anti-melody.” It helps that the songs bear the recording and mixing touch of Joseph Colmenero, who has served as RZA’s personal engineer over the last decade and has also worked with Philip Glass, Björn and others. EXO will be released soon on NORTHERN SPY RECORDS (US).

13. Murky and mystical Scottish chamber pop trio MODERN STUDIES‘ new album WELCOME STRANGERS is a bricolage where classicism meets experimentalism. It will be released on 18 May on FIRE RECORDS (UK). During the recordings, contributors include sisters, wives, toddlers, freeform saxophonists and The Pumpkinseeds, an ensemble featuring violins, violas, cellos, trombones, and vocals, were brought together to play in a remote village.

———-

14. English duo VIRGINIA WING‘s conceptual pop borrows from The Flying Lizard’s Fourth Wall, Yellow Pop Magic Orchestra and Lizzy Mercier Descloux’s Press Colour. New album ECSTATIC ARROW on FIRE RECORDS (UK)

———-

15. LOCATE S 1 aka Christina Schneider has made the album HEALING CONTEST with Of Montreal’s musicians. It was produced, engineered and also contributed by Of Montreal’s Kevin Barnes who released it on his own label SYBARITIC PEER (US). There are too many chords to be pop, too catchy to be anything else.

Vinyl LP and CD on NICEY MUSIC (US).

16. Hungarian psychedelic prog rock band PROTOPLASMA released their new album – in digital format, but it also will be released on cassette soon.

17. This year the legendary unknown raw and wild synth-punk band PRIMITIVE CALCULATORS turns into 40. They (we) celebrate it with their third album ON DRUGS. The band started in 1978, in the same place and same time than the Birthday Party. After a single, they relocated to London, in the same time than the Birthday Party, and promptly broke up in 1980. But there was a post-split-up single under the name of Zye Ye Ye in England in 1981. The first album was released in 1980. It’s a live recording of a gig supporting the Boys Next Door in 1979. The Boys Next Door was renamed to Birthday Party. The first studio album THE WORLD IS FUCKED was released in 2013. And now the third album ON DRUGS finally here on IT RECORDS (AUS). It is a little bit different than the others. Heartbreak and loss also appear beside nihilism and rage at the world. Even, there is a ballad, a dark, nasty, dire dirge.

———-

18. Norwegian producer Tore Gjedrem of Ost & Kjex channels his love of comix, bohemia and fascination with human vice, the unspoken, the Red Light districts, the alleys of the mind into his alter ego SEX JUDAS. “I wanted to create a world where any musical idea is possible, wound together by the world and word of Judas, the ultimate sinner, reborn as a child of Venus.”

The album GO DOWN JUDAS was made with contributions by his friends in the Oslo scene as hometown legend Dj Pål Strangefruit Nyhus, composer Ole-Henrik Moe, jazz pianist Bugge Wesseltoft, Sidiki Camara from Mali playing that beautiful Ngoni, and multi-instrumentalist Ivar Snuten Winther. Music inspiration ranges from Africa to 80’s NYC, from Bohannon to Quasimoto, from Norwegian New Wave to Acid House. It touches anything from blues, funk, disco and post-punk to IDM, acid house and electronic explorer music. And it’s a fuckin’ funny album. It comes as a 2 x LP and digital release on OPTIMO MUSIC on May 25th.

Our columnist Franz Fekete has written about: Sex Judas brought David Holmes to my mind. There was a summertime open-air party in Budapest, and he was late because of police problems. Hours went after hours. When he finally arrived at dawn I was drunk and smoked so much that I was not able to speak normally. And after he started to play I was just shouting and wallowing on the grass. Same feeling.

19. SHITTY PERSON is the solo-ish project of Seattle based Benjamin Thomas-Kennedy from Lesbian and Fungal Abyss. He said about: „I was really into Spacemen 3 and early Monster Magnet when I wrote this album. I was drawn to the desperation and self-hatred that those records express both musically and lyrically. I’ve always really loved drug music. I had also been studying Religious Trauma Syndrome and how leaving Fundamentalist Evangelical Christianity causes similar symptoms to posttraumatic stress disorder. I come from a long line of preachers and have a lot of resentment about how Christianity destroys children by teaching them to hate themselves.” Debut album JUDGEMENT on the Finnish label SVART.

———-

20. VITAL IDLES write primitive, whimsically brutal minimalist pop songs. They don’t just talk about disorder but often actively demonstrate it e.g. on there debut album LEFT HAND on UPSET THE RHYTHM RECORDS (UK).

———-

21. VERITAHROJA i.e. BLOODSTAINS is another compilation album of unknown and unheard punk rock from the Finnish 1970’s scene. The record opens up with RATTUS – “Täältä tullaan kuolema”. The band is one of the cornerstones of the Finnish 82-hardcore scene. Before settling down to the hardcore form the band made two seven inches with more experimental pieces – including a ska song! “Täältä tullaan kuolema” is a solid 77-punk rocker, which translates as “Here we come death”. Later on, the song was re-recorded with a speedier tempo and a more hardcore sound for the HARDCORE ’83 compilation of Propaganda Records.

Since they have released two albums and the third TAKE THE FALL is coming in April on WHARF CAT RECORDS (US)

5. SCOTTIBRAINS are the enigmatic elusive four-piece who formed through a love of late night, early morning jams at band founder, producer and Speedy Wunderground head Dan Carey’s studios in London. Theirs is hard-hitting, unsympathetic rock resembling punk’s early days, but with an increased musicality that makes it all their own. Taking their name from a shared love of San Franciscan psych outfit Bunny Brains and Dan’s cat Scotti.

7. “I got a right to say FUCK YOU!!!” is how the new album from guitarist Marc Ribot’s trio CERAMIC DOG starts off, with Ribot howling in anger at corruption, tyranny, life in general, and nothing in particular. The album YRU Still Here? on NORTHERN SPY RECORDS (US) just in time to remind us that now is a moment when anger is necessary and unavoidable. Musically it continues the lineage of his earlier experimental no-wave/punk/noise groups Rootless Cosmopolitans and Shrek. Beside Ribot, you can find Shahzad Ismaily (Secret Chiefs 3, Will Oldham, Ben Frost) on bass/electronics and drummer Ches Smith (Xiu Xiu, Secret Chiefs 3, Trevor Dunn’s Trio Convulsant).

15. The Australian songwriter LEHMANN B. SMITH compiling album after album of unreleased material and storing them away in his home studio for a rainy day. He says “I find it hard to believe that I work as hard as other people because I do spend a lot of my free time just lounging around watching TV and going to the pub and stuff like that. I put out a lot of album, but to me, that just seems like a natural part of playing music – if you love it, you’re going to leave this big trail of albums behind you.” He pauses. “I don’t know, though – maybe everyone else just has better quality control than I do.”

Way too long.. but I think it’s a good album and I love it.. and I hope you too… It’s a bit different to the others and to the music today… but who cares 😉 – wrote REVEREND BEAT-MAN from his new album BLUES TRASH on VOODOO RHYTHM RECORDS (CH)

19. The story of INSECURE MEN has started in Paris when the Fat White Family’s main songwriter Saul Adamczewski was asked to leave the band temporarily after refusing to vacate the Paris venue the band was playing because he’d arranged to meet a heroin dealer there later on.

He said about: “I fell into a downward spiral, living on a friend’s floor just smoking crack and heroin and doing nothing else. After four months I snapped out of it and realized I needed to get clean. When I came out of rehab I had nothing left other than these songs – I was like a ship without a sail – so it started to look like Insecure Men was something I should definitely pursue as my main project.”

He teamed up with his school friend Ben Romans-Hopcraft (from the band Childhood) and recorded those songs which blend together exotica, easy listening, lounge and timeless pop music. Debut album on FAT POSSUM RECORDS (US)

Inspired by artists such as the Sex Pistols, Elliott Smith and Hank Williams she started her first country band, Sarah Shook and the Devil in 2010. But now here is her second album with THE DISARMERS on Chicago BLOODSHOT RECORDS.

The album YEARS is about finding a way. A way through exhaustion, depression, betrayal, hangover after hangover, upper after downer after upper, fight after never-ending fight. It’s about picking yourself up and dusting yourself off after years of being trampled and beaten down, jutting your chin out, head high after they’ve done their worst, and shouting: Fuck you! GREAT ARTISTS > INDEPENDENT LABELS > BRAND NEW RECORDS

1. Two from The Flying Luttenbachers formed short-lived Chicago no-wave band MY NAME IS RAR-RAR in 2000. Later vocalist of Xerobot joined them. And later their drummer formed XADDAX with post-hardcore math rock band Dazzling Killmen guitarist. MY NAME IS RAR-RAR recorded their first album in 2003 but broke up before mixing it. Now this fuckin funny split 7″ EP brings a pair of newly mixed and mastered tracks from that final recording session together with two new XADDAX songs on SKIN GRAFT RECORDS (US). And this is the premiere of the song „One”

kbctrax11

2. „post punk rock psychedelic now country sometimes disco indie rock and roll”. I take the risk that I wrote this about JAZZ BUTCHER during the listening of their 1989 album BIG PLANET SCARY PLANET from the 4 albums box set reissue series THE VIOLENT YEARS on FIRE RECORDS (UK). But before there were THE WASTED YEARS. Anyway if you want to know more about them you can find more in KILLBONOCLUB 10

3. French SCANERS play punk rock and roll like Ramones, Dickies, Devo, Suicide, Spits, Les Thugs just somewhere between the 4th and 5th dimensions. Debut album very soon album on Dirty Water UK and a bunch of French labels: Adrenalin Fix Music, Casbah Records, Dangerhouse Skylab, Teenage Hate Records, Strychnine Recordz and Trokson Records

4. Komodina 3 was a Greek band. Everybody knows them but nobody saw them to play. Like the band Ghost Train (or Kummitusjuna) in the film Zombie & The Ghost Train by Finnish director Mika Kaurismaki which is among my favorites. The story of Komodina 3 started n 2005 in Thessaloniki. Some musicians recorded an album, made 80 CD copies, hand-delivered them to some local men of taste. But they didn’t drive to their only show because was too cold out. Seven years after the owner of Slovenly Records heard his CD in a van during the euro tour of his label’s two Greek bands, Bazooka and Gay Anniversary, and he released it. One of them started electro-punk solo career as NOMOS 751. Debut album on SLOVENLY RECORDS (US)

5. French drum duet DEUX BOULES VANILLE triggering analogic synthesizers, making grindcore constructions, techno and dub improvisations. Idiotic music. Danceable. New album PLANET GOUGOU on KYTHIBONG RECORDS soon.

6. For twenty years API UIZ was a polyrhythmic multicolored punky math rock-like trio from Bordeaux. They have influenced an entire generation of French musicians by their ferociously independent way they play and produce “raw, unworked, but structured music” which was the title of their debut album. Since 2015 API UIZ is a quintet. PEPLUM, their first album with the extended line-up released now on 12″ vinyl on Kythibong, Les Potagers Natures, Mon Cul C’est Du Tofu, La République Des Granges, Attila Tralala (Belgium) and Red Wig Records (Germany)

7. LADY BIRD is a movie about a young, rebellious woman living in Sacramento, California and the constraints studying at a Catholic high school. Its soundtrack was composed by JON BRION who can be known from bands like The Excerpts, The Bats, and The Grays or his film scores from eg Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The Lady Bird soundtrack will be released soon for the first time on vinyl via FIRE SOUNDTRACKS (UK) and LAKESHORE RECORDS (US). It’s a strange big puzzle of different melancholic moods. Anyway Brion is featured as keyboardist and drummer on Marianne Faithfull’s 2003 album, Kissin Time, and co-wrote a song, „City of Quartz”, for her next work, 2005’s Before the Poison.

8. Crazy, chaotic, frantic, but melodic Spanish garage rock and roll band WAU Y LOS ARRRGHS!!! released a sold out in a flash 7″ single on their farewell gig last year. Out again on 2 Feb on SLOVENLY RECORDS!

9.

hollysinners

The Spanish Sinner bros with Carmelo Tornado formed the punk band HOLLYWOOD SINNERS. Album KHÖME KAKKÄ released now on DIRTY WATER RECORDS. At first I did not like it. I don’t understand why, because during the 3rd listening I found – Hey, this is fucking good! Since I love them.

10. Dirty, filthy rock n roll with a dark sense of humour from New Zealand by THE CAVEMEN. Debut album first time on vinyl with two bonus tracks: „Swamp Thing” + „Juvenile Delinquent” on DIRTY WATER RECORDS (UK)

11. A fresh indie-pop hit song from Sweden with cold by HATER. Red Blinders EP released on FIRE RECORDS

12. RIK & THE PIGS: nothing special just total punk. A CHILD GATOR album on TOTAL PUNK RECORDS (US)

13. Bad dream pop by New Yorker movie maker ALEXEI SISHKIN. New album, on cassette by FORGED ARTIFACTS (US)

14. The hymnic song Still Alive celebrates the present and welcomes the unknown by Scottish indie pop band THE SPOOK SCHOOL, but they are punks just like the Buzzcocks or Joanna Gruesome, but with a transgender with a beautiful moustache, and this is what a simple woman can’t.

COULD IT BE DIFFERENT? album on ALCOPOP (UK) and SLUMBERLAND (US)

15. DRIFT is the seventh full-length by NYC rock polymaths THE MEN. Release soon on SACRED BONES RECORDS. Collaborators: Delicate Steve on guitars, Parker Kindred (Antony & The Johnsons, Jeff Buckley) on drums, and Chris Coady (Beach House) as producer.

16. Nowadays Glasgow based alien-obsessed hyperactive girl KEEL HER plays high standard lo-fi sometimes noisy outsider bedroom pop alone. But with her band! It’s a revelation. Just like the Breeders were in the 90s. I know it. I was there with 28 lucky ones to see them on 22 Dec in Refugee Info Bus Fundraising Party at DIY SPACE FOR LONDON

keelher1

17. MOON DUO worked up a version of ‘Jukebox Babe’ because their sound engineer Larry got it stuck in his head and was singing it all the time. And on the other side of the EP there is No Fun for the the 70th birthday of Iggy Pop. Released on SACRED BONES

18. Psychedelic ambient country band SUSS members have worked in various capacities with Lydia Lunch, the B-52s, Rubber Rodeo, k.d. Lang, David Bowie, John Cale, Wilco, Norah Jones, The War On Drugs, Burt Bacharach, and countless others. Their debut album GHOST BOX is a trip in the mid-western desert. It’s not psychedelic, it’s hallucinogen.

19. I am very surprised. I did not wait for anything special, but this is an exceptionally good album – writing this during the second track of first listening. Who is she: RUBY BOOTS? Scottish and Italian descent Australian-born, Nashville-based singer-songwriter inspired by country, blues, and rock. This time her backing band is TEXAS GENTLEMEN who plays „Timeless American Music for fans of The Band, The Swampers, and Willie Nelson.”

Album DON’T TALK ABOUT IT released on BLOODSHOT RECORDS (US)

20. THE GOON MAT AND LORD BENARDO: Adrenaline and alcohol fused primal boogie mayhem from Liege, Belgium. Formerly they played as Stinky Lou and the Goon mat and lord Benardo, but Stinky left the band to open Lou’s Bar. New album TAKE OFF YOUR CLOTHES on VOODOO RHYTHM RECORDS (CH)

21.

“Come on baby let’s rock!
Well, OW! Woo! Ah! Ah!
Aaaah-ooo!”

It has started in Boston in 1983 when punk rock guitarist Peter Greenberg decided to form an instrumental rock and roll band, but Barry White upset his plans when he began unexpectedly singing at the record store where they worked.

Yes, Barry White, who was 11 in 1966 when his uncle took him to see the James Brown Revue and „that was my first witness of a fantastic show. (…) all the girls were screaming and the guys were going AAAHHH!!! It was wild. It was probably the biggest moment of my life – said the frontman Barrence Whitfield who was born as Barry White who after the gospel choir became a drummer, and played funk, soul and prog rock music.

After two albums the original line-up of BARRENCE WHITFIELD & THE SAVAGES disbanded in 1986 because of Greenberg and the bassist moved on, but Barrence rebuilt and kept alive the band until 1994. The three core member reunited in 2010 and now soon here is the new album SOUL FLOWERS OF TITAN. It was inspired by the cosmic outlook of Sun Ra and elaborates on the Cincinnati-based King Records and Federal Records sounds of the 1950s-‘60s.

1. Trip-hop acid folk under jazz attack. On the one hand the story has begun in 1979 when Ágnes Zsigmondi – singer of Hungarian underground folk band Kolinda – illegally left her homeland and went to live in Paris because her band’s music was not suit for the Hungarian one party state standards so they could not published any records while they released albums in France where she met American jazz drummer (of Sam Rivers and Archie Shepp) Stephen McCraven. Their son MAKAYA McRAVEN was born there in 1983 and has become a drummer. His new mixtape album HIGHLY RARE released now. It was recorded „just days after the death sentence of the American presidential election” when INTERNATIONAL ANTHEM RECORDS invited some jazz musicians into a bar in Cihacgo to play in support of sets by Belgian DJ LeFtO

6. BACK TO THE ROOTS OF INDIE POP

„The great liberating album for our generation was London Calling by the Clash. At a time when the post-punk mob seemed to be removing more color, texture, and beauty from their music with every passing week, London Calling was a revelation, taking us back to reggae and soul and everything that was possible” – said Pat Fish

who formed the band JAZZ BUTCHER in Northampton in 1982 when a friend lent him a compilation album of 70s soul hits, he got a vision of a new way forward, and wrote the song “Partytime”, a three-and-a-half-minute repudiation of post-punk’s sonic and verbal tendencies toward deadly seriousness.

They made four albums for Glass Records between 1983 and 1986. The jacket notes on the dusty tome that recalls this period mentions private detective television series Randall And Hopkirk (Deceased), Thatcher, DIY post-punk, LSD, surrealist cabaret, The Velvet Underground, a bottle of Cointreau or two, the Amstrad 7090 and Ronco’s ‘Black Magic’ compilation. These first four were released in a box set as THE WASTED YEARS on FIRE RECORDS this year October. And now here are the four VIOLENT YEARS in a box set that compiles their next four albums, originally released on Creation Records between 1988 and 1991. The song Looking For Lot 49 is taken from their ’88 album Fishcotheque.

In 1995 they retired in protest against Britpop, American actor Chris Evans and their own frustrating inability to unseat the government of John Major. But nowadays they play as the Jazz Butcher Quartet with ace trumpeter Simon Taylor. Next show > March 1st London 100 Club

8. Italian artist Giovanni Dal Monte aka LA JOVENC from the other side of music. One of his albums “Birds make love with electric ladybugs” initially was imagined as an exhibition of photographs of insects and landscapes and the entire music was composed using samples of insect and bird sounds. But now here is a transposition of an ode from his brand new album MATER on SONATA BOTANICA and ATMOSPHERE RECORDS which contains transcripts of midi scores of renaissance music of Palestrina, De Pres, Ockeghem, Taverner, Encina, Lemlin, etc. It reminds me Laibach’s Bach cover album Kunst der Fuge.

10. THE GREEN CHILD is the collaborative project of Mikey Young from Aussie new wave punk Total Control and Raven Mahon from American indie garage rock Grass Widow. The band’s name was inspired by Herbert Read’s 1935 utopian, anarcho-communist sci-fi novel called The Green Child. The story begins in 1861 with the faked death of President Olivero, dictator of the South American Republic of Roncador, who has staged his own assassination. He returns to his native England, to the village where he was born and raised. On the evening of his arrival Olivero notices that the stream running through the village appears to be flowing backwards, and he decides to follow the water upstream to discover the cause. The stream’s course leads Olivero to a mill, where through a lighted window he sees a woman tied to a chair, forced by the miller to drink the blood of a freshly slaughtered lamb. But at this moment we are under of influence of 80s synth pop on a cold, foggy and rainy day when their debut album released on UPSET THE RHYTHM RECORDS (UK)
